"one or more server hard drives must be checked for errors" every day when backup occurs

$
0
0

This is on Windows Server 2012R2 Essentials specifically. But I saw the same behavior on 2012 Essentials before switching.

Both on the Dashboard's alerts and daily health reports, it indicates that one or more drives are unhealthy and need to be fixed. However, it does not list any disk specifically. This occurs several minutes after the backups are scheduled, and will change when it happens if I change the time for the backups.

This happens EVERY DAY. Deleting or ignoring the reports just cause it to come back. Disabling backups, or disconnecting the drive they're stored on doesn't fix it. Neither does formatting the drive and setting up backups again.

I've not found any specific errors, and I've scanned the system partitions using their volume ID, and that hasn't helped.

No virus scanner nor disk tools are installed. There are no 3rd party file system filters installed either.

The Event Viewer doesn't indicate any issues specifically either.

This is frustrating and annoying.

Help with Scheduled Backup. "task contains XML....."

$

I've been chasing my tail the last few days trying to figure this out... help!

I'm am using Windows Server 2012 R2, as a domain controller....

I'm trying to set up a scheduled backup to complete once daily, at 9pm. I have gone through the wizard to set this up, and I have a Seagate NAS as the backup location. ie "\\nas ip address\backups"

Once I select the location, it prompts me for the user/pass for the NAS. Great, no problem. I enter it, and then it takes me to the "Confirmation" tab/page in the wizard.

When I hit "Finish", it shows the green scrolling status bar, and after about 10 seconds I get a popup warning of "the task XML contains a value which is incorrectly formatted or out of range".

??????

I've tried al sorts of things, but I'm still stuck. I'm not trying to create the backup in powershell, or anything like that. I'm not doing a "full" backup, just certain selected folders, .... why would I be getting this error???

FYI "Backup Once" starts to do the backup, then fails with the status "Backup failed to complete. An error occurred while writing to the backup target. Detailed error: The Parameter is incorrect." WHY?

The NAS drive is fully accessible, I know I have the right un/pass, etc etc...

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Server 2012 Essentials backup failure and Intel program folder/asc showing 75GB whst is this ?

$

Firstly backup fails , backup drive is alive and well and attached to the server -

Error message says one or more selected items not included in server backup ?

Have been thru the suggestions and there is nothing in the backup inclusions that I can see that is not mean't to be there.

Have noticed that in Program Files (X86) intel/asc/erlang/lib there is 75GB data in there ?

Have several other servers running and they show 7-10gb in total in the same spot and wonder if this has something to do with the failure, or what these files actually do or how to reduce them.

The C:\ drive at this point is below 20gb free space could this cause it to fail.

AS if I run a disk cleanup and get the drive back to 21 or 22gb free space the backup will complete.

Questions regarding Ws2012/2012r2 Backup

Hi, I have some quesstions regarding WS2012 Backup

1)from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc732540.aspx
"If you use a remote shared folder, make sure that the folder is available, that you have write access to the folder, and that you are a member of the Administrators group or Backup Operators group on the computer hosting the folder. Each time you create a backup, it will overwrite the older backups so that you will only have one backup at a time. The backup will inherit the access control list (ACL) permissions of the folder."

Is possible to store multiple backups (Bare metal recovery + SystemState + C:)  on a external harddrive using just the GUI?

2)i run "wbadmin get versions" and got a list of around 30previous backups of same server (Bare metal recovery + SystemState + C:) and every backup should be around 30GB, but if I mount the external hard drive reserved for backups i can only find one .vhdx of 30GB. Is it normal?

Thank you

Hi,

Removable Storage Manager option is not available in Add/Remove Features of Server Manager.

I also tried Installing the "Windows6.1-KB974674-x64" but no luck, it prompts to turn on the Removable Storage Management.

Please help me to enable the RSm in Add/Remove features of Server Manager.

Thanks!

Problem with Windows Server Backup 2008 R2 with Advanced Format (4K) drive.

$

I'm trying to use an Advanced Format drive (4K sectors) with Server 2008 R2 Backup.

If I format the drive using Disk Management as normal. Windows will create a partition on the drive that is 4K aligned, and all is well. I can verify that the partition is aligned by running Acronis WD Align.

I then set up a scheduled backup in Windows Server Backup 2008 R2 and specify that I want to use the drive for backups only. Windows Backup then re-formats the drive for it's use. However after checking with Acronis WD Align the new partition that Windows Backup has created is NOT aligned on a 4K boundry. This causes performance problems.

If I use Acronis WD Align to re-align the partition correctly; Windows Backup will no longer recognise the drive as a valid backup destination.

Is there anything I can do to force Windows Backup to create a 4K aligned partition, or is my only option to buy new drives that use 512 byte sectors?

Hi, I have a windows 2012 standard server which i run windows server backup.

It logged the following error and deleted the backup(not a happy camper).

Event ID: 25

Source:  volsnap
Level: Error
Description:  The shadow copies of volume\\?\Volume{93896cfc-d904-11dd-8cb5-001ec9ef572e} were deleted because the shadow copy storage could not grow in time.  Consider reducing the IO load on the system or choose a shadow copy storage volume that is not being shadow copied

The target is an external 1TB usb 2.0 drive. This backup is the only thing that is running against this disk.

So why does this happen?

Its only the io load of the usb-drive which would be of concern(right/wrong).

Why is it necessary to delete the entire backup?

Hi Everyone,

I have single server domain environment with Server 2012 Std. and MS SQL 2012.

The problem is, I can’t perform backup. I’m fighting almost three weeks.

On two occasions, I have been successful. I used suggestions from Microsoft TechNet, however after several day performing backup, without any reasons, the problem appears back.

Now I can’t find solution about this error:

I know, System Writer is missing.

There a lot suggestion on WEB, however nothing helps. Everything else, on the server, works fine.

The suggestion from Microsoft: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee264196(v=ws.10).aspx, is bizarre.

Of course, the Volume Shadow Copy is set to manual.

Also I did try several other sites, ex.: http://systemadministratorrecipes.blogspot.com/2012/08/event-id-8193-vss-error-server-2008-r2.html, but nothing helps.

Does anyone have any idea?

Windows Server Backup cannot backup to network or mapped drive - Microsoft what were you thinking?

I still cannot believe that you cannot do a scheduled backup to a network drive in windows server 2008.  You can only do it to a local internal/external drive.  Microsoft are you crazy?  That goes against all best practices for backing up your data when you should have a backup at least 60 miles away from the original server.  Gives us back the NT Backup tool or provide a solution for this.

URGENT! How to setup VSS and Backups for accidential deleted files for folder redirection?

$

Hello,

I just set up folder redirection for clients (My Documents etc.) and it's working, now i was wondering how to do the following things:

1. Create Volume Shadow Copy's on the client folders and how to set this up from the server so the client's speed won't suffer from creating this shadow copy's.

2. Imagine a user removing one of his files accidentilly, is there anything to configure so they can get accidential deleted files back?

So i'd like previous versions of files to be available if they accidentilly change something within a file (Like .doc files) and i'd like the file to be available from somewhere if they accidentilly totally delete it.

Please help me with this, it will be really appreciated,

Thanks in advance.

Marc

Server 2012R2 Windows backup 100% CPU usage and no backup

Hello!

I have a problem with two VM´s on a HP Proliant ML350p Gen8, that has Windows Server 2012R2 operating system with Hyper-V role installed.

Both VM´s are also 2012R2, one is DC/DNS/FILE/PRINT and the other one is Exchange 2013.

The problem itself is that, when Windows backup (wbengine.exe - Block level backup engine service) inside VM starts, it uses almost maximum CPU resource, so the VM´s CPUs are 100% used. Backup itself is not working, there is no network trafic. Only way to get rid of 100% CPU usage is to restart the server.

When i start backup manually (Backup once - scheduled backup options), it is working and the CPU usage is around 20-30%.

One VM (DC/DNS/FILE/PRINT) has 2x vCPU and Exchange has 4x vCPU.

The problem started suddenly, the backup were performing slowly and failed.

Backups are scheduled on different time. Host level Hyper-V backup of VM´s works without any problem.

The backup location is Synology DS414 NAS and the servers are set up using iSCSI, for connecting separate backup lun´s for each server.

The Hyper-V host and both VM´s are patched up-to-date. Ofcourse i have tried a lot of restarts, looking event log, VSSADMIN - cannot find any errors...

The network setup:

Hyper-V host has a team of two physical adapters, that is set up with a external virtual switch (shared with management operating system) and used by the VM`s normal network trafic.

Hyper-V host itself is using separte physcial network card, for connecting with iSCSI to Synology NAS.

I tried to set up another physical network card on the host and create a new virtual swich, add extra virtual nic to VM`s and use this for iSCSI traffic for Windows backup and it didnt make things better.

I need to find a solution, because i cannot restart the server every night for the backups to work.

Replica Inconsistent & Recovery point creation failed

Hi All,

I am having serious problems with our production DPM server.

The protected server that is having problems is a physical Domain Controller (DC1) with SCVMM installed (so SQL is also installed on it). Recently DPM has failed to create recovery points, and constantly reports the replica is inconsistent on 3 SQL Data and the VMM Backup Component. (VMM Express Writer).

I have been trying to troubleshoot this for a number of days now and its not been successful.

DPM Typically reports the following errors -:

The VSS application writer or the VSS provider is in a bad state. Either it was already in a bad state or it entered a bad state during the current operation. (ID 30111 Details: VssError:A writer did not respond to a GatherWriterStatus call.  The writer may either have terminatedor it may be stuck.  Check the System and Application event logs for more information.(0x80042319))

The target server DC1 logs error messages like the following.

The COM+ Event System failed to fire the PostSnapshot method on event class {FAF53CC4-BD73-4E36-83F1-2B23F46E513E} for publisher  and subscriber . The display name of the subscription is "{75470F40-3413-4F68-BDBB-0443A6277674}". The HRESULT was 80042318.

The COM+ Event System failed to fire the RequestWriterInfo method on event class {FAF53CC4-BD73-4E36-83F1-2B23F46E513E} for publisher  and subscriber . The display name of the subscription is "{75470F40-3413-4F68-BDBB-0443A6277674}". The HRESULT was 80042318.

An unhandled exception was encountered while processing a VSS writer event callback method. The VSS writer infrastructure is in an unstable state. Restart the service or application that hosts the writer.

I have tried quite a few things from google and technet and peoples blogs etc to no success, so rather than speculate further or pollute the thought process anymore  - I think a best approach to clear my mind and get other people thoughts and possible solutions and guidance - Any help in this matter is most welcome.

Kind Regards

Wayne

Hi,

I have a script running the below

Wbadmin start backup -backupTarget:\\192.*.*.*\Jupitor\serverBackup\%dd%%mm%\CDrive -include:C: -vssFull -quiet > cDrive_log.txt
Wbadmin start backup -backupTarget:\\192.*.*.*\jupitor\serverBackup\%dd%%mm%\DDrive -include:D: -vssFull -quiet > dDrive_log.txt

I run this command wbadmin start recovery -version: ***********-** -itemtype:file -items:d:\bkup\monday\**.dbf  it shows me "invalid specific path"

how do i recover the item files in d:\subfolder? Example D:\account\january\statementofaccount\statementofaccount.pdf

Thanks and Regards Cityuser

Windows 2012 R2 Domain Controller unable to backup system state

We recently implement a new Windows 2012 R2 domain controller but have been unable to take a system state backup using Windows Backup.  We get the following error?

There was a failure in updating the backup for deleted items.  Error code 0x8078014D

We have other Windows 2012 R2 domain controllers that we can backup the system state on using Windows Backup without any issues.
