I have two Windows 2008R2 servers in the main office, one which holds FSMO roles and another 5 scattered around the country, all on WAN. The two in the main office are VMware VM's on different hosts for redundancy.
In the main office we use BackupExec and do nightly backups of the AD servers to offsite NAS, extra backup mid-week to Tape and another weekly backup to Tape.
Question is, if something happened to the host with the AD server containing the FSMO roles etc is there any issue simply restoring the entire VM back to another host if it's within 24 hours of the failure occurring and that's it?
I assume i don't need to go through the process of seizing roles and the cleanup of metadata left behind from the failed server before building a new one?
