Windows Storage Server 2012 - Windows Backup problem: scheduled backups fail after first one runs

Hello All,

I have a new Dell NX400 NAS server running Windows Storage Server 2012.

I am attempting to use Windows Backup. I am backing up to an alternating pair of Seagate 4TB external USB drives.

I can run a full one-time bare metal and data backup with no problem at all, and it will update a previous backup already on the disk... Works every time.

The problem is, I cannot do a scheduled backup. I can create a scheduled backup and it will run the first time, every time. But then, the next day when it tries to run again, it fails. The error message (more or less) says the disk is not available... although I can see that the disk is mounted and I can access it through Explorer.

If I go to the disk and delete everything on it, then the scheduled backup will run the next time.

Now, I don't mind starting a backup when I leave the office each day... but this seems really silly. What's the point of creating a scheduled backup when it only works once?

What am I missing?

Thanks! -Kevin
