SBS 2008 backup keeps failing. (Unable to create VSS snapshot (0x81000101)

Good Morning,

I am attempting to setup a rotating daily backup on a server running SBS 2008.

While I believe that I have everything setup correctly as far as the (third party) software goes, I have yet to get around this one issue: Unable to create VSS snapshot (0x81000101).

I have corresponded a few times with a gentleman from tech support who has first turned my attention to the following hot fix from Microsoft.

http://kb.backupassist.com/articles.php?aid=3039 (link within post)

I have tried that, but the hot fix tells me that it is "not designed for this operating system", though it says clearly on the Microsoft page that it is.

Next he had me crate a batch file called "FIXVSS08", I will post the commands if anyone wants them. After running the batch file and rebooting, the backup ran flawlessly and I thought we had it licked. However the next day I got the VSS snapshot error again. I ran the batch file again and then the backup ran without a hitch. Again next day, VSS error...I think see a pattern anyway.

While I am usually not opposed to a good workaround, I would really like to try and resolve this on a more permanent basis. The idea of having to run that batch file and reboot the server kind of takes the automation out of automated backup...

Any pointers in the right direction would be appreciated.

I can see the Volume in healthy Condition but When i restore Image from External Drive I face below Error:

the System image Restore Failed

Error Details: the Disk that is Set as Active in BIOS is too small to recover the original System disk. replace the disk with a larger one and retry the restore operation (0x80042407)

I even tried with Server B that has small C drive Partition and backup.

Restoring Server Backups

Hi I'm having trouble restoring a backup of windows server 2012 essentials. My setup is:

1 -160gb hard drive with the operating system on it

2 - 2tb hard drives with raid 0 to hold all of my data

1 - 4tb hard drive that is only used for backing up everything

I ran into trouble when the 160gb hard drive died. I replaced the hard drive and re installed the operating system but somehow installing the new hard drive broke my raid causing me to lose all of my data. "No worries" I thought to myself I have been doing twice daily backups of everything since I put this server together.... My problem is restoring the backups. I have two backups listed in the windows backup software from the day before all of this went down, they both say completed successfully and have no errors listed. If I go to the folder I have vhdx image files of the three partitions that get backed up every day. When I go to restore one of three things happens.

1. If I try and restore the entire volume using the recovery wizard I get the error "Windows Backup cannot find a shadow copy of the backup set on the storage location"

2. If I try and restore just "files and folders" I can't expand any folders to see the files/folders. All of my folders say "Unable to browse *foldername*. Windows backup cannot find a shadow copy of the backup set on the storage location."

3. If I restart and try a recovery from the instillation disk I'm not able to see the recovery files at all.

I'm able to mount the hard drive images and two of the images work just fine but not the third (The one I really want with all of my data on it). When I mount the third it tells me the file system is RAW and would I like to format (Always chose no). I have scanned the image file when it was mounted as RAW with R-Studio. R-Studio finds all of my files but is only able to give me back less than a third of them. Scanning the broken raid doesn't give me any files.

If anyone could help me out I would be eternally grateful. I stand to lose a ton of data including almost all of the videos and pictures of my kids. I thought I was doing everything right but for some reason my back ups wont go....

Thank You!

wbadmin backups - are my assumptions about shadow copies correct?

I have two drives (E and F) on my WHS that are backed up daily at different times to the same backup target.  Are my assumptions at the bottom correct?

- WHS 2011 with E and F data partitions both having 1TB data.

- Use wbadmin/task scheduler, E and F separately backed up daily to the same local target drive (X)

Monday, 1:00am: 1TB E backed to vhd.

Monday, 3:00am: 1TB F backed to vhd.  1TB E moved from vhd to shadow copy.  Tot shadow = 1TB

Tuesday, 1:00am: 1TB E backed to vhd.  1TB F moved from vhd to shadow copy.  Tot shadow = 2TB

Tuesday, 3:00am: 1TB F backed to vhd.  1TB E moved from vhd to shadow copy.  Tot shadow = 3TB

And so on....

Assumptions - Are they correct:

1. During a backup, any previously backed up data in the vhd that is different from that being backed up, will be moved to the shadow copy area on the backup drive.

2. Since 2 drives are backed up separately to the same target, each backup's data will be completely different from that in the vhd.  So even if I've only changed one file on E, a backup of E will write the full volume to the vhd because E data is compared only to the vhd (which contains only F data) and not to the previous version of E data (which is in shadow copy).

3. The shadow copy storage will be huge for only a few backups.  It appears that I should have E and F backup to separate target drives to prevent this.

Is there are way to reinstall task scheduler on server 2008 r2?

I have a server 2008 r2 and the backups are not running so I checked the task scheduler and there were corrupted task images. I then repaired them. Now when I schedule backup in the server manager, it always hangs at scheduling backups.

I've run sfc /scannow but no positive effect. I've searched if there is a way reinstall task scheduler on server 2008 r2?

I'm planning on re-installing .NET 4.0. Will it resolve the problem?

Hello

We have DFS server which is in Windows 2003 and we are in process of migrating that file server to Windows 2012 R2. I was wondering if there is a way to restore files in Windows 2012 R2 from Windows 2003 Backup? I know there is a tool for Windows 2008 but not sure if that works in Windows 2012 R2.

I really appreciate any help...!

Thanks

Specify Remote Folder - The specified path is not a remote shared folder

I'm getting this error when I try to check a backup stored on a NAS.  When I attempt to recover from it, I pick "A backup stored on another location" then "Remote shared folder".

I put in the path: \\192.168.16.17\public\server\2014-01-24

And what I get is the above error message: "The specified path is not a remote shared folder"

The path clearly is a remote shared folder. If I paste it into explorer it opens fine, and I can copy/delete files from it.  What gives?

Unable to restore daily backups from offline-disk

Hi, I am having problems restoring daily backups from offline-disks.

The backup is saved full on Monday, and incremental the next four days.

At the end of every week the online backup is written to offline backup external disks. This operation is done by this bat-script:
rmdir E:\WindowsImageBackup /S /Q
mkdir E:\WindowsImageBackup
robocopy.exe "K:\WindowsImageBackup" "E:\WindowsImageBackup" *.* /E /NP /R:10 /NFL /MOVE /LOG+:"K:\BackupCopyLog.txt"

I am able to restore day-to-day from the backup files within the same week when the backup files are located online.

My problem is that the day-to-day backup is lost when restoring from offline disks. I am only able to restore from the end state (the end of every week) when the data was written offline.

This is relevant information about the server environment:
Windows Essential Business Server 2008 - Version 6.0.5700.0
Windows Server Backup - Version 1.0

What can I do to get the daily backups from offline disks?

Question about prompts for file access for admin users

Issue:  When attempting to run a PS script that changes file perms, User Admin2 continually gets prompted by UAC but user Admin1 does not.  Both are members of the admins group on server Web3 (a Windows 2k8 r2 server that is part of our domain).  I need both users to be able to run a powershell script that will modify the file permissions so changes can be made and then run a 2nd powershell script that will lock the permissions back down.  Admin1 can run both scripts and all works fine.  Admin2 has to right-click and select Run as Admin to get the script to run.  Then when trying to browse the folder structure, Admin2 is given "access denied" and has to give himself permissions before he can browse.  I am Admin1 and I am trying to figure out why this is happening to Admin2 and correct the issue so this user can login to the server, run the scripts, and perform the necessary tasks before logging back out.  Can someone please help me??  thanks already

Why is it you have two admin users and one is prompted for UAC to run the script and the other user is not?

Hi please help, Windows Server backup keeps failing with an error "The drive cannot find the sector requested", I am doing a full backup to an external drive which has been dedicated for backups, it does about 94.6gb out of 95gb so is close to finishing. I have performed a check disk, updated all my hardware drivers (its a HP server with hardware mirrored drives), I am at a loss - does anyone have any ideas or solutions.

I have uninstalled and rebooted the server and then reinstalled but still get the same error

Also must add that this is a live server, oh and is my first server 2012 install (soon to be last!!)

How to restart VSS writers without rebooting

$

Hello fellow teckies.

I'm having this problem when backing up with Symantec Backup Exec 11d where it generates errors about not being able to backup VSS sections on the C drive.

I've already posted with Symantec.  https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/vss-c-drive-errors-when-backing-server

They're saying to re-register and restart the services.  My question is, can the services be restarted without rebooting?

Unfortunately rebooting is not an option as this is a critical production server.

If anyone can answer, please let me know.

Thanks :)

Hi Folks,

I am Nanda Kumar K P,

In my environment am having PDC & BDC, with Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard OS installed on it, with Active Directory integrated DNS server role running.

I am scheduling a Server Backup of System State, DNS to a Network Drive and prompt for Domain Administrator account for the confirmation. Till this steps i am able to do successfully, after this i am getting below error.

After some search, i have found that this due to the policy "Network access: Do not allow storage of passwords and credentials for network authentication" enabled.

If i Disable this policy, windows 7 domain user account frequently getting locked out.

Please help me out on this, how i can take a backup of Domain Server System State Backup to Network Drive, with this policy enabled on the DC"OR" How can we prevent the Windows 7 User accont locked out, through Domain Controller.

Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

Regards,
Nanda Kumar K P

"No disks are available for use a backup destination."

I'm attempting to schedule a backup in Windows Server 2008 SP2, and am getting an error during the step "Select destination disk".  Here's the full text:

"No disks are available for use a backup destination.  This can happen when all disks attached to the computer are hosting volumes that contain an operating system or application data.  Attach an empty disk to use as a backup destination."

It is true that there are no free volumes w/o operating system or application data, but I'm backing up to a network share, so that should not matter.  And in fact it works fine when using the "Backup Once" option... only the "Backup Schedule" option fails with this error.

Thanks,
Dave

Backing up PST files across WAN

$

Hi there,

I am currently using robocopy to backup our satellite office file server across WAN to our main location. It works OK for the most part until it gets to pst files.

If pst files are changed (which they are on a daily basis), robocopy backs up the whole file instead of the changed parts. The problem is that these PST files are big (over 2gb in size) and the WAN connection isn't great.

Can anyone suggest perhaps another solution that backs only the changed parts INSIDE the pst files instead of the whole file. As far as i understand robocopy does not have that capability. Perhaps this is relevant to other file extensions also, not just PST.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
