When trying to backup Windows Server 2012 using built-in Windows Server Backup tool I get the following error:

The backup operation that started at '‎XXX....' has failed with following error code '0x80780179' (An error occured while writing to the backup target.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

The event details I looked at doesn't provide any help other than the ErrorMessage=%%2155348345

I searched everywhere but the solution eludes me.

Can someone please help me resolve this?

Thanks

Hi,

I have installed the Windows Server Backup feature several times in Windows Server 2012, but the "Windows Server Backup UI" is missing under the "Administrative Tools" and under the \System32\wbadmin.msc .

Any ideas how to re-create or workaround this problem ?

I really appreciate your help !

With kind regards,

2008 R2 - Fresh install - ASR writer fails on backup

I have set up a few new Server 2008 R2 machines with Hyper V role recently and every time I run a backup that includes System State, the backup will fail and the ASR Writer will show a state of 7 - Failed.

This happens with Windows Backup or Backup Exec 2012. Symantec says it is a Microsoft issue. Microsoft says it is a Symantec issue. I don't care who the issue is with, I want clean backups!

I don't see anything in the logs.

Backup Help

After reading through countless posts, I'm still confused as ever on which option to use "VSS Full Backup" or "VSS Copy Backup", so I will just tell you my setup and what I want to be able to do, and you can tell me which is right. I'd like a nightly incremental backup. Everynight, it should just backup files/folders that I've specified that have been edited/changed and create a new .vhd file. Will doing it this way effect my ability to restore?

Also, if I wanted to create an image of the machine, is this doable from the windows server back up utility? Then if the server crashes, I can restore it (with a disk?) and then restore my data using the most recent backup that I'm trying to setup at the moment.

This is my plan, because one of my servers actually did crash this weekend, and it was a pain to get it up and running again. I create a system snapshot (can windows server backup do this?) and save to an external 4TB drive. If it crashes, I load up disk, plug in 4TB drive and recover that snapshot. Once it loads up, I can go to the windows server backup utility and select "recover", i can then point it to the network location that I'm sending all these nightly incremental too, and it will restore all the files/folders.

Is this correct and possible?

Thanks

Windows server 2008 r2 export event logs

Hi to all,

I have a question about backing up event viewer logs. My boss wants to backup event logs every couple of weeks. I know I can export logs, but we have about 20 servers, and this job can be very dificult, regarding the number of servers. Second, I can not run ANY script due to security policy on the domain. Can anyone tell me is there any kind of software that can help me manage logs easier? Because this is taking too much time from me. Thank you all in advance!

How to backup the ProgramData\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys directories and files

$

Using an Axcient appliance to backup Windows 2008 server.  The axcient appliance will not back up the ProgramData/Microsoft/Crypto/RSA/MachineKeys directories and files due to permission denied error messages.  First of all do these files really need to be backed up?  Gather from the reading that some of the files are important but not always all of them.  Also gathered from the reading that improperly changing permissions on the files can render some of the files invalid which could cause issues for the users that really own them.  In examing the file permissions the owner of the file cannot be displayed.  How can one determine who owns the directory/file?  Also caught some hints in some of the newsgroups and discussion threads that changing permissions is not enough to allow backups of the MachineKeys and Registry Hacks may be required.

Am looking for a simple checklist, in laymen's terms, of steps to follow to get the Axcient appliance to back up these directories and files.

Thank You.

System State Backup interrupted on Windows 2008 r2 - Access is Denied

Hello,

I am working on Windows Server 2008 r2, trying to perform a System State Backup.  After configuring the System State Backup and in the middle of the process, this is interrupted with the an Access is Denied error.

Here are more details: I configure a Shared Network Folder with the right privileges to store the Backup. The size of the Backup is estimated at 8 GB. There is more than enough space in the Shared Network Folder to store the backup. After having completed almost 1 GB, the process is interrupted with the following error message:

Error en la copia de seguridad de C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-t..tional-chinese-dayi_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_6052679946eea92d\TableTextServiceDaYi.txt durante la escritura: error [0x80070005] Acceso denegado.

Translation:

Error in the security copy of C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-t..tional-chinese-dayi_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_6052679946eea92d\TableTextServiceDaYi.txt during writing: error [0x80070005] Access is Denied.

I will appreciate if someone can shed some light into what might be the cause that the backup cannot be completed successfully.

Take care,

Hi please help, Windows Server backup keeps failing with an error "The drive cannot find the sector requested", I am doing a full backup to an external drive which has been dedicated for backups, it does about 94.6gb out of 95gb so is close to finishing. I have performed a check disk, updated all my hardware drivers (its a HP server with hardware mirrored drives), I am at a loss - does anyone have any ideas or solutions.

I have uninstalled and rebooted the server and then reinstalled but still get the same error

Also must add that this is a live server, oh and is my first server 2012 install (soon to be last!!)

SCSI hard drives and Server 2K8 Backup

I'm using a SCSI hard drive in one of our servers and I've been seeing Bad Block errors in the Event Log but HDD's can work for years on a bad block but when I try to backup the drive I get a message saying "The file or directory is corrupted or unreadable is it that 2K8 doesn't support SCSI? or is the drive that far gone? I can still access it and browse the data, So I need to know so I can justify getting a new HDD and preferably not SCSI.

Can I copy windows server backup files to another location?

I am new to using the Windows Server Backup tool.  I've got Server 2008 R2 Standard with multiple virtual machines running on it.  I need to make sure the server and virtual machines are properly backed up for potential recovery later.

1.  Will Windows Server Backup properly backup the virtual machines so they can later be recovered?

2.  Can the backup files be copied to an alternate location somehow from their original location so I can keep a copy of the backup files off-site?  (So far from what I've read, this doesn't seem like an option, but most of the posts I've come across are a couple years old.)

Thanks for the assistance.

The Volume Shadow Copy operation failed with Error 0x800423F3

Hello.

I have setup Windows Backup in my 2008 SBS environment to ensure an additional backup as well as my Backup Exec schedule. All was working fine until the other day and now each night the Windows Server backup fails with the following error:

The Volume Shadow Copy operation failed with Error 0x800423F3

From the event logs I can see:

1. (Information Event) VSS Writer: prepare for the backup

2. (Information Event) ESENT: lsass Shadow Copy instance starting:  Full Shadow Copy

3. (Information Event) ESENT: certsrv Shadow Copy instance starting:  Full Shadow Copy

4. (Information Event) ESENT: svchost Shadow Copy instance starting:  Full Shadow Copy

5. (Information Event) ESE: starting Shadow Copy instance

6. (Information Event) MSExchangeIS: Exchange VSS Writer successfully prepared the Database Engine for a full backup (for each Storage Group)

7. (Information Event) MSExchangeIS: Prepared for Snapshot successfully

8. (Information Event) MSSQ$MICROSOFT##SSEE (unsure if this is relevant): The description for Event ID 17137 from source  MSSQ$MICROSOFT##SSEE cannot be found.

9. (Information Event) ESENT: svchost Shadow Copy instance freeze started

10. ESE (Information Event): Information Store, Shadow Copy instance freeze started

11. ESENT (ERROR): svchost Shadow Copy instance aborted

Other events include:

VSS (Information Event): Ran out of time while expanding file specification

ESE (ERROR): Information Store Shadow Copy aborted

ESENT: (Information Event): The database engine began replaying log file

The logs then continue almost identical for each Storage Group.

I checked the status of Microsoft Exchange Writer in VSSAdmin and it says Last Error: Timed Out.

As I said it has been working fine up until a few days ago. Nothing has changed without our SBS environment.

Any help would be appreciated as I am a bit lost when it comes to VSS.

Kind Regards

Dan Hargrove

Hi all,

My server OS is Windows Server 2008 R2 (EN). But I set the time zone as China time (UTC +8:00) in the Windows already. One day, I wanted to recover my system in PE. So I inserted the Windows Server 2008 R2 disc into the DVD-ROM, and then booted from the DVD. Then I set the Time and currency format to Chinese (Simplified, PRC), but the time zone didn't chang to China time (GMT +8:00) automatically, it was still showing GMT -8:00 (PST). Can I fix it?

Thanks,

Failed Items - AppData and ServiceProfiles directories

Hello,
For a few of our Windows Servers we are seeing various failed items in our backup reports. Mostly, these are .dat.LOG files and .dat files. Below are some of the failed items from the log. Can anybody please provide some suggestions on whether or not I can filter some of this stuff out safely / add exclusions? These servers are not using VSS for their file backups, but ARE using VSS for system state backups. WS 2008 R2.

Windows Server Backup - Exclude Folders with filter (2012)

$

Hello there!

I am searching fo a way to backup a folder with all it's subdirectories except the directories called "source".

Windows Server Backup supports exclusions based on filters for file name extensions, but i haven't found a case where folder or specific filenames have been excluded.

- Is there a way to do that with built in features?

- Or is it better to use a powershell script in combination with robocopy?

- Third party utilities would be my last resort.

I am thankful for any hints and suggestions into the right direction!
