Hi please help, Windows Server backup keeps failing with an error "The drive cannot find the sector requested", I am doing a full backup to an external drive which has been dedicated for backups, it does about 94.6gb out of 95gb so is close to
finishing. I have performed a check disk, updated all my hardware drivers (its a HP server with hardware mirrored drives), I am at a loss - does anyone have any ideas or solutions.
I have uninstalled and rebooted the server and then reinstalled but still get the same error
Also must add that this is a live server, oh and is my first server 2012 install (soon to be last!!)
Win2k8 R2 server operating system with Adaptec 29320LPE SCSI adapter in a PCIe slot. Attached to Adaptec is a Quantum Superloader 3 robotic tape library. LUNS support is enabled in the Adapted BIOS. During POST Adaptec card shows two devices found: Quantum DLT4 and the LUN1 tape library.
Device Manager only recognizes a single Tape Device: Quantum DLT 4. No "Medium Changer" device or "Robotic Library" device shows in Device Manager.
The Quantum Superloader works fine with my older Win2k3 Server. That server is using a PCI 64bit Adaptec card for the Superloader 3.
I could use some assistance on how to resolve this issue.
Hi,
I have installed the Windows Server Backup feature several times in Windows Server 2012, but the "Windows Server Backup UI" is missing under the "Administrative Tools" and under the \System32\wbadmin.msc .
Any ideas how to re-create or workaround this problem ?
I really appreciate your help !
With kind regards,

We are planning to implement a backup solution in our environment using Windows Server Backup. Testing in our Test environment has been successful, but implementing a small-scale one-time test in our Production environment is not going as I expected.
Namely, as a test on our Production file server, I am using Windows Server Backup to back up a single folder with 6 files and is 512 KB in size (total). I used the Backup Once Wizard to back up this folder to another drive as a test. It has been running for almost 2 hours now on the "Scanning file system..." step. The drive that contains the small folder with the 6 files I am attempting to back up has 3.08 TB total of data (several thousands of files and folders).
Why is the "Scanning file system" step taking so long? Is it enumerating all files and folders in the drive, not just for the folder I want to back up?
When this "Scanning file system" step ends, will it take as long each subsequent time we try to do a "Backup Once" type of backup (using the GUI or using a Powershell cmdlet)? This was only a test, so I'm not going to set up any incremental backup based off of this small folder test.
Ultimately we are looking to do a weekly or monthly backup of a folder that contains about 1.5 TB in data total. If we were to kick this task off for the first time, generally how long can I expect it to take? Longer than 24 hours? The length of time it takes may dictate whether we end up using this tool for our backup solution or switch to something else.
I am running windows back up on a hyper-v windows 2008r2 machine and it failed this weekend. The destination NAS drive had a physical failure and we replaced it. I believe that will fix the issue, my problem is that I cannot find a definition for the error code (2155348081). Below is the details:
Log Name: Microsoft-Windows-Backup
Any incite would be greatly appreciated.

We are using DPM 2012 to protect several servers. Periodically (one to two times per week), VSS writers will get in a failed state. Rebooting the server always clears up the issues but it seems to me that there should be a way to restart services or processes to re-initialize the writers. For example, when the SQL Server writer is in a failed state, you simply restart the SQL Server VSS Writer service and the issue is fixed most times. Rebooting production servers two to three times per week just to clear up VSS issues doesn't make sense. The ones I can't figure out how to fix without a reboot are these:
All the other writers are pretty easy to figure out, although I'm not sure why "System Writer" is really the Cryptographic service.
Anyone provide some clarification on what service to restart to clear up these VSS writers?

When I try and schedule a Windows Server (R2) backup (with the Exchange plug-in) it says "The task XML contains a value which is incorrectly formatted or out of range". I can submit an immediate task without a problem, though.
I did enable the backup feature after Exchange was installed. That's the only thing that I can think of which may be causing this.
I'd like to create an automated rotating schedule of backups using wbadmin and task scheduler, which would backup Bare Metal Recovery; System State; Drive C: and D: to a Network Share in a pattern like this:
I need to use the wbadmin commands within the Task Scheduler and do not know any of the required Syntax to make sure everything goes smoothly, I do not want to do this through the CMD.
Hello,
I'm trying to setup backup on newly setup 2012 R2 server. I have Linux and Windows guests. Windows guest back up fine, sometime I do get errors though. With Linux guests (CentOS7, latest build) - it doesn't work I get error:
0x800423f4, The writer experienced a non-transient error. If the backup process is retried, the error is likely to reoccur.I read somewhere it might be because of integration tool version mismatch? Yes, I do get this warning in logs:
A storage device in 'ASTERISK' loaded but has a different version from the server. Server version 6.0 Client version 5.1 (Virtual machine ID 660823D6-72FF-4110-81E9-BFD572C54490). The device will work, but this is an unsupported configuration. This means that technical support will not be provided until this problem is resolved. To fix this problem, upgrade the integration services. To upgrade, connect to the virtual machine and select Insert Integration Services Setup Disk from the Action menu. But, after research on this error - I found that it's "OK" and should be fine.

Seems like a catch 22. How do I backup Linux Guests?

Hi guys, started using Windows Previous versions to restore some files in my lab. The files are stored on the following:
Restoring files is fine but I'm looking for clarity on the restore folder behaviour. Let me give an example(Note: for the example purpose assume NetApp snapshot and VSS copy are the same thing which essentially they are):
Now, if I look at the previous versions for folder A I have 3 restore points. Now:
So, it seems that restoring a folder does the following:
Is this understanding correct? Cant find any documentation around this.
I ran DPM backups and got errors when i was tring to run system state, realised i get the error "System Writer is not found"in windows backup. I checked VSS admin list writers and system writer was not stated in output.
I there after ran to google and tried to follow https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2009272?wa=wsignin1.0 however that didnot work because my event ID registered error ID 8193 which i as well googled and ended up on https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/7b52f7c1-a783-409e-9af3-da64567676df/vss-error-8193?forum=winserverfiles
But i didnot have any profilesthat had BAK extension or id in them. So now i am still stuck with tihis problem. Any help highly appreciated.

Sir,
This is our scenario.
We are using NAS Server in our Environment with Windows Storage Server 2008. From Windows Storage Server, Windows Server backup utility We are not able to take backup.
Because, It is not showing up the folders inside the required volume. It shows only Volumes(Not folders)
But, In Windows Server 2012 R2 We are able to add the folders inside the required voulmes. So, We have planned backup a Network drive(from NAS) using Windows Server 2012 R2.
But, We are not able view the Mapped drive(Z:\ drive- NAS) in the backup source page.
Is it possible to backup a Network Shared folder using Windows Server Backup utility?
If Possible, Let me know what are the settings I have to change in our side?
This problem was first encountered on an IBM x3650 in a cluster with an IBM x3550 for failover, however this problem is reproducible on a server running HyperV not part of a cluster.
When I try to run a VM based backup from inside the VM using the server backup utility to E: drive(which is an attached vhdx file). It fails with this error
Backup failed to complete. There is not enough disk space to create the volume shadow copy on the storage location. make sure that, for all volumes to be backup up, the minimum required disk space
for shadow copy creation is available. This applies to both the backup storage destination and volumes included in the backup. Minimum requirements: For Volume less than 500 megabytes, the minimum is 50 megabytes of free space. For volumes more than 500 megabytes, the minimum is 320 megabytes of free space. Recommended: At least 1 gigabyte of free disk space for each volume if the volume size is more than 1 gigabyte.
Detailed Error: Insufficient storage available to create either the shadow copy storage file or other shadow copy data.
In the event viewer I see this error
EventID: 521 The backup operation that started at 'TIME’ has failed because the Volume Shadow Copy Service operation to create a shadow copy of the volumes being backed up failed with following error code '0x80780119'. Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.
This problem was not happening in our test setup using Server 2012 R2 MSDN copy, before rolling out to production using ourVolume license copy of server. So as a test I installed two VMs on a Host(MSDN), one VM using our MSDN copy of server and one with our Volume license copy of server, very simple install, install Windows backup, attach VHDx file and attempt bare metal backup. The MSDN copy is able to perform the bare metal backup. TheVolume license copy fails with the above errors.
Has anyone else run into this problem? Or any ideas on where to look to see the differences between the two VMs that is stopping the backup from completing?

Attaching both drives does not fix the problem, but rebooting after both drives are attached does fix it. If both drives are attached on boot, one can be removed and Windows Server Backup will function correctly until the next boot. This leads me to believe that Windows Server Backup is looking for both drive on boot and failing in some way if they are not available. The desire is to rotate one drive offsite for disaster recovery, so having both attached on every boot is undesirable. Windows Server Backup works with this configuration without problem on Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2012.
Deleting the catalog using "wbadmin delete catalog" and then recreating the backup schedule did not help. Is there anything obvious that I'm missing?
Hello everybody,

Hi,
I am planning to install the TFS 2012 on different drive location (as my default Installation drive not permit me for this as space limits) and Visual studio and SQL Server installed on C: (default installation drive).
My question is, Will TFS installation cause any trouble while installing and configuring?
