Windows Backup running at wrong time on Windows 10
Hi,
I've been using Windows Backup and Restore for years under Windows 7 with no problems. Recently moved to a new Windows 10 system and am trying to get my Windows 7 Backup running to save an image file. When I set it up, it seems to run at the correct time the first time. I am trying to run it daily at midnight. First night OK. Next and subsequent nights it runs between 2:08 and 2:11am. Doesn't matter what time it is scheduled for. It shows the correct next run time, but then runs around 2:10am. The computer is sleeping during that time. Nothing else scheduled to run around then. I see nothing "interesting" in the windows logs. In fact, there usually aren't any log entries at all around midnight.
I have a third party backup solution that runs 9 additional backup jobs at various times during the night. The PC runs all those jobs OK. The time on the system is OK. Time zone is OK. I see in the logs it syncs with the timeserver OK. When it wakes up from sleep, it seems to adjust the time OK. The backup runs fine without any errors that I can find. But I can't get it to run more than once at any time other than around 2:10am.
Probably unrelated coincidence, but my PC is set to sleep after 1 hr 5 min. This 2:10 timeframe is double my sleep time, added to my desired start time of midnight.
Have searched quite a bit, but not found any solution. Did see several things about wakeup timers, sleeping, and managing system time, but none of what I've found and tried has had any impact. Have deleted and recreated the backup and schedule numerous times, but on the second night it still goes back to running at around 2:10am.
Any suggestions about what to look for/check?
Windows 7 / Server 2008 R2 Bare Metal Restore 0x0000007B Stop Error
Hi,
I am tring to restore a Server 2008 R2 Standard Ed (full installation) RTM to a virtual machine, from a full Windows Server Backup image taken of a physical machine (Dell PE 2970). All restores fine, and looks good until it tries to boot, when a Stop Error occurs, with the following error:
*** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xFFFFF880009A9928, 0xFFFFFFFFC0000034, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000)
I believe the non-bracketed portion means "INACCESSABLE_BOOT_DEVICE".
There is only the System Reserved volume + a C: volume (system volume) + F: volume (DVD drive) on the original server. It has had other volumes in it before, which are correctly listed in the MountedDevices registry key, but they have not been physically present for a while.
The virtual disk I'm trying to restore to is several GBs larger than the original virtual disk on the RAID controller (2 disks in RAID 1).
I can't figure out why the server isn't booting. I've successfully restored Server 2008 machines from physical machines to VMs before, including servers using hardware RAID cards (e.g. Dell SAS 6/iR). The only difference I can think of is that this is Server 2008 R2, this is a 2 proc server (I've tried several virtual proc numbers on the VM to no avail), and the RAID controller is PERC 6/i, and this is the first server I've tried with that particular RAID card.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, even if it's to point out that I'm looking in the wrong direction.
Many thanks,
Chris
Server is not working properly, should i repair it or rebuild it.
Today our main dc started to showing some dns errors & rpc errors and after some troubleshooting its went down, somehow we manage to bring it back. Now we are planning to rebuild it from start. We have additional DC with dns and group policy. We are trying to move fsmo roles on ADC. Is it possible to move GPOs to ADC, as we have some group policies also, Make ADC our Primary DC. Our DHCP is being handled by pfsense. We have AD replication also which we need to keep that way.

VM Domaine Controler : backup and restore, is it sufficient to save only the vhd?
Hello,
- We have 2 DC's windows server 2008R2 in our domaine, both are vm in different hosts.
- Bakup procedure: For backup we save daily the vhd for each machine
- Restore procedure: for restore (for exemple if we lost the host) we will juste create a new vm with the same configuration and attach the vhd.
+ But a friend told me that this solution is not possible for DC machine, we can use it for another server (printer, antivirus, dhcp....) but not for DC,is it true?
+ Must i use windows server backup to save the ADDS and DNS ?
+ Is there a open third party solution ?
Many thank's
Windows 2016 Backup fails - Event ID 517 error code '0x807800C5'
Hi guys,
I recently installed 2 Windows 2016 servers on a Hyper-V 2012 cluster. I'm backing up to a brand new QNAP NAS with *plenty* of storage space (just checked, 11TB available). Verified the access credentials, all good. The 2012 server guests are backing up fine, but the 2016 servers initially failed with the event id 513 CAPI2 error:
Cryptographic Services failed while processing the OnIdentity() call in the System Writer Object.
Details:
AddLegacyDriverFiles: Unable to back up image of binary Microsoft Link-Layer Discovery Protocol.
System Error:
Access is denied.
I followed the steps mentioned in https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-hardware/cryptographic-services-failed-while-processing-the/c4274af3-79fb-4412-8ca5-cee721bda112?auth=1 , but to no avail (rebooted the server too).
The backups keep failing with event id 517:
The backup operation that started at '2017-09-19T01:51:23.118823700Z' has failed with following error code '0x807800C5' (There was a failure in preparing the backup image of one of the volumes in the backup set.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.
I tried changing the backup selection as well, no success...
I have read about hotfixes for earlier releases of Windows Server. Would there be one for 2016 as well?
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
=== Quick update: I just configured and ran the backup on our 2016 domain controller, which is on physical hardware. Same result.

Windows server 2012 Datacenter VSS event ID 12289 & 8193 Error
Hi Everybody,
I have on my hyper-v failover cluster hosts the same error (server 2012 datac).
All my writers are stable and no error.
All updates and hotfixes I have found are installed (I think :P).
When selecting the backup (volume snapshot) in settings of the vm's the backup fails.
Settings of the VM under “management” select “Intergration Services“. Deselect “Backup (volume snapshot)“.
When deselecting the box the backup will run and complete succesfully.
However I still want to fix the issue and want to backup the vm's without the downtime.
The error appears when running Windows server backup (WSB) and the 3rd party arcserve backup software.
Also when going to properties of C:, shadowcopies, settings and pressing on the Details button.
Error box:
Failed to initialize the Details dialog for Volume C:\
Error 0x80042306: The shadow copy provider had an error. Check the System and Application event logs for mote information.
Does somebody have a fix for me?
A while ago I posted another question but that down not work anymore:

Windows Server Backup - ASR Writer failure
Hi,
I have been trying to resolve this problem for a while now. I replaced the main HDD on my server, (by using a drive clone) and ever since then the BMR portion of my daily backups fails with this error:
"BMR backup failed as ASR writer failed while creating shadow copy and was skipped. Detailed error: The writer experienced a transient error.."
I recall reading somewhere this had to do with an invalid volume name that the ASR writer can't handle, but I can't for the life of me find out how to find what and resolve it.
Does anyone have any experience with this?
Thanks,
System state backup on Server 2012 R2
Using the WSB utility, I get the following error "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process."
I ran the utility through powershell and got the same error. I checked the log files and get this error "Error in deletion of [C:\System Volume Information\001.dat] while pruning the target VHD: Error [0x80070020] The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process."
Looked at resource monitor and system constantly has access to the file.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Backup Error - 0x810000E4 Windows Backup has encountered a problem with the backup catalog
Dear all,
I'm trying to backup my files onto a 2TB big external USB disk. My computer is Dell Latitude E4300.
When I run the backup, it runs normally but ends with this error:
0x810000E4 Windows Backup has encountered a problem with the backup catalog
When checking the zip files on the USB drive, it seems that only some of the files have been backed up. The same confirms the restore option when I browse the files in the backup.
When I start the backup again, it continues - i.e. acknowledges the files already there and backs up a additional files but again fails after some time.
Any ideas please.
Thank you,
Tomas

Server 2012 - How to backup and restore complete system with RAID adapter upgrade
Hello, TechNet:
I have a working Dell PowerEdge R310 with a recent fresh install of Windows Server 2012 R2.
The server has a PERC S300 RAID controller with four 2TB SATA disks in the front bays.
During the fresh install, Windows couldn't find the RAID5 array's virtual disk (created using Dell's controller procedure with the 4-drive virtual disk initialized). We then setup the RAID controller without virtual disk, and were able to install Windows on a single 2TB disk to get it running (currently using about half that space).
The server has since had a couple of applications installed, and a second (admin) user account was created.
I plan to replace the S300 RAID controller with an H700 RAID controller (which I'm hoping will allow the RAID5 virtual disk to be seen for re-installation of Windows 2012). In theory, my procedure will be:
- Do a complete "backup once" with the S300 adapter installed.
- Install the H700 adapter.
- In H700 controller setup, delete the configuration and create the RAID5 virtual disk containing all four drives.
- Re-install Windows 2012 (assuming it sees the new virtual disk).
- Restore the backup.
If you might offer any advice for me, I would find it most helpful. In particular:
- Does my procedure make sense to you?
- Is my backup plan the right one?
- For Restore, should I try it from within Windows or, booted to Windows DVD, from the Recovery Environment such as restoring a system image?
Thank you, thank you,
Best regards,
Dan.
System state backup
Hello,
Assuming we have DNS integrated with AD, does the system state backup contains the DNS objects?
System Writer is not found in the backup
I am still getting the notorious WS08 "System Writer is not found in the backup" error message; including this in Event Viewer:
Backup started at '8/31/2009 1:14:07 PM' failed with following error code '2155348226' (System writer is not found in the backup.). Please rerun backup once issue is resolved.
Restarted the cryptographic service; problem still exists.
Then, I execute this:
The problem goes away...and re-appears on the reboot.
Is Microsoft going to release a hotfix/KB for this issue?

Tom
windows server backup -allcritical switch
Hello,
What's the difference between the 2 commands in backing up the server using windows server backup when there's only one single C partition on the server? One has "-allcritical" and one does not. I"m trying to backup the whole server including the system state and be able to do a bare metal restore if need to.
1) Wbadmin start backup -backupTarget:\\share\2008 -include:C: -vssFull -quiet
2) Wbadmin start backup -backupTarget:\\share\2008 -allcritical -include:C: -vssFull -quiet

How to clear backup history
in Windows Server Backup GUI it shows a list of all the backups run under the messages section (along with any which have failed), and in the status section under all backups it shows that a number of copies are backed up. How do I wipe these messages and the details of the backups (but not delete the actual backups off the disk) and also, some of those copies simply dont exist anymore so how can I make sure it reflects what backups are actually stored on the backup disks?
This is running on a Windows Server 2008 system
thank you
