Does Server 2008 do Incremental?

$

Hi

I am testing server 2008 backup, the original not R2.

I remember that I scheduled a backup and it seems to be running successfully each night  .I think the only option was to back up the entire volume.

I cant however see the contents of the backup as the drive is taken away from windows explorer. So I cant see what is being backed up each night.

Does server 2k8 do a full backup 1st and then smaller backups thereafter or does it backup the entire 20 gb + OS again and again every night? Will it then quickly fill up the hard drive? 5 backups would then be 100GB!!

How can I check this information?  I can only see that the backup has been successful and nothing more.

Thanks

"No disks are available for use a backup destination."

I'm attempting to schedule a backup in Windows Server 2008 SP2, and am getting an error during the step "Select destination disk".  Here's the full text:

"No disks are available for use a backup destination.  This can happen when all disks attached to the computer are hosting volumes that contain an operating system or application data.  Attach an empty disk to use as a backup destination."

It is true that there are no free volumes w/o operating system or application data, but I'm backing up to a network share, so that should not matter.  And in fact it works fine when using the "Backup Once" option... only the "Backup Schedule" option fails with this error.

Thanks,
Dave

Bare Metal Restore

Hi,

What is the difference between Bare Metal restore and System Restore in Server 2008 R2?

I have created 2 hard disks in Hyper V.

C has the Server 2008 R2 and an app. I took bare metal back up of C and saved it on D drive. Then I removed C drive (assuming one HDD crashed). I tried to restore but could not do it.

Then added that hard disk again and tried and I was able to perform system restore. I dont get the difference Bare Metal restore and System Restore in Server 2008 R2.

New Seagate Backup Plus Giving me I/O Error

I have recently added a new Seagate Backup Plus to my existing network backup and thought all I would have to do would be to plug it in and away it would go on the nightly backup routine.  Boy was I wrong!  I have finally been able to add it to the list of available drives and tried doing a back up and now it is giving me errors that say this:  System Reserved.  One of the backup files could not be created.  Detailed Error:  The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

I have no idea on what to do now!!!!!!

Windows Server 2012 Standard Virtual Machine Backup "Completed with errors"

We currently run a WS2012 Standard Host with a WS2k3 VM as well as a WS2k13 VM. We recently upgraded the host and added the 2012 VM. The Windows Server Backup is backing up the host components, drives and the WS2k3 VM perfectly, but is failing on the WS2k13 VM. I am trying to figure out why. I have attached the fail log as well as the successful log. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Successful:

Backup of volume C: succeeded.

Backup of volume D: succeeded.

Backup of volume G: succeeded.

Hyper-V-VMMS ID:10111

Hi,

I have a problem during my backup since i have add to my cluster hyper-v a VM with 32Go of RAM. Each host (hypervisor) has 80Go of RAM but when this backup is running, host memory is 40Go (host1) and 64Go (host2 who host this VM with 32Go of RAM).

If this VM are running during the backup, hypervisor who host this VM has an error Hyper-V VMMS (Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-VMMS, ID:10111) in log file and my backup doesn't work successful.

For information, this VM haven't in the backup rule. It's a VM just for calcul and doesn't backup this.

On technet forum i have found the same problem but i don't test the rosenstc's answer (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/ace96e27-53b7-433a-b646-8e397372e642/30112-vss-error-event-id-10111-failed-to-mount-the-virtual-hard-disk).
Before test, i prefer have a return for not install a bad solution.

Dear Team,

I have one system on which windows 7 was installed. I made that machine as a dual boot and installed windows 2008 R2 on seperate partition. Then i took Full backup including Baremetal recovery option and place that backup image into different external drive.

Now my drives were like :

Local disk C: \ contains windows 7  , E:\ contains Windows 2008 R2 and G :\ Drive contains Data

External Disk H :\ contains Backup System image

What happened my local drive os got corrupted and i deleted all three partitions and made it Single Local drive.

Now when i am trying to restore complete OS ( By going repair option ) , the external drive is assigning itself partition letter as E:\.  So i am not able restore my OS and getting error "Parameter is incorrect (0x80070057)"

Thanks and Regards,

Hyper-V Server Headache

Dear All

At present, I am trying to get started on MSCA/MSCE training. My intention was to dowload a free Lab from:

http://blogs.technet.com/b/keithmayer/p/earlyexpertlabsetup.aspx#.Ufc8nt2Gmql

I had a few issues so decided to go for the 'Free Hyper-V Server 2012' download (big mistake as a beginner)

I followed the download, burn to DVD and install instructions and created a back up of my Windows 7 Ultimate OS

Destination is a Laptop PC with all of the spec requirements

After installatiuon of Hyper-V Server 2012, I noticed that Win7 OS had gone (overwritten/deleted?)

I have been, without success, trying re-install Win7 directly on the physical HD and also trying to battle my way through Server Core/PowerShell to try to create a new VHD/VHM to copy the Win7 to the Hyper-V OS too, also with no success

I've copied the Win7 OS to a USB drive and tried all boot settings in BIOS to boot in order from DVD-USB-Network-Hardrive, to no avail. It still only boots from the HD

I created a RDC (Remote Desktop Connection) from my Mac (only secondary computer I have) and have been able to control the Hyper-V from the desktop, but cannot install anything onto the Hyper-V Server

Actually, I've been scouring the internet and have spent 2 weeks trying to solve this problem (part baptism of fired, part embarrassment). I've called MS helpdesk, who were zero help, and told me to contact the manufacturer ONLY!

I would appreciate any advice on this matter, as I am completely at a loss what to do and it's soul destroying for my hope to be able to study MCSA/MCSE fails at the first step!!!!

Thanks in advance

Creating a winRe disc for Windows Server 2012

I am trying to take a backup and put it on a test server.

I tried performing a recovery in Windows Server Backup, but I can't get it to work properly. So I have come to the conclusion that I would need a winRE boot disc.

I have tried to create one using this TechNet guide http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc749147(v=ws.10).aspx but I get stuck trying to unmount the image. it says there is no image to unmount.

Does anybody know how to successfully create this disc? I have made several winPE discs so I am somewhat familiar with this process.

Even better, does anybody know of a better way to recover a system backup?

Thanks.

Windows Server Backup Error

Hi,

Sorry if this has been solved before, but I haven't found a fix on the forums, or anywhere else.

For the last few days, Windows Server Backup running on Window Server 2008 R2 has been failing.  In Windows Server Backup it has this error:

Unable to backup system state on Windows 2008R2 using Windows Server Backup

$

I have a new server with Windows 2008R2 preinstalled on it.

I wanted a separate partition for programs so I created this and installed my programs onto it.

Using windows server backup I can do back ups of all volumes but I cannot backup the system state.

The error says 'The system writer is not found in the backup'

When I do vssadmin list writers there is no system writer there.  I've googled and tried lots of 'solutions' including uninstalling and reinstalling windows server backup, taking ownership and changing permissions on the pending renames, filemaps and temp folders in winxs, installing a Hotfix from Microsoft (says this is not applicable to my computer even though I chose the right version) etc.

By the way it doesn't matter which destination I  backup too either, still get the error.

Please help!

Hello,

I am attempting to complete a backup on a W2K8 STD server to an external USB drive. The devices are 120GB Samsung S1 Minis. I cannot complete either on-demand or scheduled backups to these devices. When I attempt a backup an error is almost immediately generated and the backup stops.

The error displayed in WSB is:

[SOLVED] Can't determine why a volume was added as a part of system recovery

$

I use a combination of backup methods on our server, including Windows Server Backup.  I noticed a couple of months back that it started including a volume other than the system volume as a part of a system recovery backup.  I can't for the life of me figure out what caused this.

In looking through the content of the drive, the only folders actively used on the drive are ones that were setup as sites in IIS.  These were only for testing purposes, so I have removed the folders as well as any references to them in IIS.

So as it stands, nothing should be actively referenced on this drive, yet Windows Backup still says that it contains system recovery info.  What am I missing?

Thanks,

Richard

I'm currently trying to use Windows Server Backup (WSB) for BMR backup of my servers. The servers are fileservers so the E-drive only contains userdata (backup by other software).

My problem is that I'm unable to de-select the E-drive. I get the following error message: "This volume cannot be removed from the backup because it is a critical volume required for bare metal recovery"

Anyone have a suggestion on how to figure out why this drive is marked as a critical volume and how to remove it and still get BMR backup of C-drive?

Hi,

What is OS backup? Already I have taken my AD (Active Directory) backup. Is there anything else related to OS backup? We have Windows Server 2008 R2.
