Windows Server Backup Error: "Volume(s) OS have and unsupported files system and cannot be backed up."

I am wondering if anyone else has seen the below error message? If so how do I correct it, I don't want to have to purchase a 3rd party backup software package to backup the entire server if possible....

Below is the hard drive formats...not sure why OS partition is Fat32..I did not load the OS on this server.

Below is the error I get when trying to run any backups using the windows server backup configuration wizard?

Any ideas on how to correct this without a reinstallation would be great :)

WBADMIN Not Excluding Files/Directories

I am using the command line wbadmin.exe in my backup script to backup all of the Windows 7 PCs on my home network to my NAS device.  The script works flawlessly on all machines but I don't keep any data on any of the PCs except for the media PC which has several hundred gigabytes of local files.  I don't want to backup the files as I already have them backed up on my NAS.

I want to use wbadmin to create an image based backup of the C:\ drive and all OS related system files to ensure I can successfully recover from a hard drive failure or another instance where I have to reformat the disk.  Below is the command I am currently using.  No matter how I specify excludes: directories, files, etc it doesn't exclude them and includes everything in the backup.

wbadmin START BACKUP -backupTarget:"%BackupDestination%\Drive-C_%date%" -include:C: -exclude:"C:\Media","C:\Users\Public" -allCritical -quiet

Is the -allCritical switch causing this to happen?  Is there another way to ensure an image based backup is captured without this switch?

Also, when I was trying to exclude particular files, *.doc, for instance it didn't like this.  What is the best way to exclude by file type?

Thanks so much!

Windows Server 2008 R2 Problems with Bootmgr missing and others...

I don't know why I do this to myself.

Everything was working fine until I decided to update the BIOS and finally found the correct BIOS file and flashed it using EZ Flash 2 on a ASUS L6T SE Motherboard. Now once done, I returned to bios and changed my boot order back to normal and now get a BootMGR missing. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart.

Now I've looked everywhere online. I have a installation disc in the DVD drive and tried to do a Windows RE recovery in command. All the Bootrec commands, BCDedit commands, even in DISKPART and making my Disk 0 active. Nothing works! Then I gave up and now as my last resort I can't even reinstall a new Server OS on any of my drives! It tells me: "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition."

When I try to use the Windows RE it asks for drivers because my operating system is not listed. I tried downloading drivers from the ASUS website and none of them work. I have officially given up. I should of just left it alone. :(

WSUS Backup with Windows Server Backup on 2012 R2

Hi,

I recently installed a WSUS server in the company I work for. It is fully configured and everything is working fine.

I've configured the WSUS to store the WSUS Content folder on the D: Drive and the WID Database on the C: Drive.

I am currently using the Windows Server Backup tool to backup the Full system (including System State, Bare metal recovery, System Reserved, C Drive and D Drive).

I just want a confirmation that this type of backup I'm using, is backing up both my WSUS content folder and more importantly my WID database. Or do I need to install an additional software like (SQL Server management studio) for me to backup the database?

I hope that I explained myself clearly enough for you to understand.

Thanks

Hi All

Suddenly When I look , My Server Shows 2 drives,

It was RAID mirroring configured , So I suggest I lost RAID Configuration ,

I think If I reconfigure  RAID on BIOS, I will lost all my data  and its program files Configuration , So If I take disk1 full backup , I could restore everything .right?

If I do so , I may not need to reinstall my programs , or any data?

Please confirm

i created 2 servers, one core one GUI standard. i was attempting to run a backup to remote location from serve GUI to server core. i created a share folder and gave admin full rights to the share. the folder was shared successfully. going through the backup wizard i type in the file path for the backup and get questioned about credentials. i type in credentials for both local and domain admins and still receive error saying that either i am typing in credentials wrong or do not have privileges to the share. i just lost 10 points on an exam. thanks Microsoft. thanks for making server 2012 just as horribly garbage as windows 8

Windows Server Backup Fails - VSS Error

Setup:
Windows server 2012R2 on host. only has Hyper-V and windows backup services running.

6x Hyper-V virtual machines running windows server 2012R2

All software up to date with windows updates.

Host is a HP Blade 460 G9, no HD os is on a HP SD flash (this is the recommended config) guests are on a HP Storage Blade D2220 8x300gb sas raid 10. backup is to an external usb drive connected to the host blade. have also tried running a back to a shared folder on the storage blade. Im just trying to backup the guest hyper-v's

Have been unable to run a windows server backup since day one of install, same error constantly, see below.

Host:
Event ID 8299 VSS
A VSS writer has rejected an event with error 0x800423f4, the writer experienced a non-transient error if the backup process is retried, the error is likely to reoccur.

Event ID 10172 Hyper-V
Vss Writers inside virtual machine ... failed to perform BackupComplete to it shadow copy (VSS snapshot) set: Catastrophic failure (0x80000FFFF).

Guest: No errors that I can find in event logs

Running VSSadmin list writers doesn't display any writers in a error state.

the backup fails almost immediately with no effort to backup data.

only information I can find online is in relation to the integration services being up to date, which they are.

***Please do not suggest using other software for backing up, I want to use the integrated windows server backup - I have my reasons. There is NO reason why this solution should not work as is out the box

Backupservice account already add into Backup Operators group but still cannot access DC system state. Anyone know anything else need to do to achieve my requirement? Thanks in advance.

How do I remove the old backup points? The data has been removed or the old drive has been disconnected but it states I have them available. It either has the drive has been disconnected or I can get in to the restore and each folder has "unable to browse".

Power outage coused the servers running in 2012 R2 "Hyper-V" to stop working.

Hello All,

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

The other day, we had a power outage that messed up something in the windows backup and recovery program.

I have The 2012 R2 Host, With 2 servers running in Hyper-V.

1 is Winsvr. and the other is an AD. Both in Hyper-V.

All 3 are set to do auto backups everyday, each at different times of the day.

They were both set to backup to an external 1TB SSHD set to A:

The Host does it's backup as it should. But the two in Hyper-V, is where the problem lies.

The AD Server, had gone from backing up daily to only backing up every few days.  And the WinSvr will not backup at all, says the path does not exist.

What are my options, and how can i fix this?

Thanks

Rick

Scheduled Backup not running consistently

Using Windows Server Backup I setup a scheduled backup on Server 2008 running Exchange 2007.  It ran as scheduled until 5 days ago, when it stopped running in its entirety until this morning.

There is a gap in Windows Server Backup between these dates. The backups do not fail as they do not run at all. Although each day in WSB the backup says it is scheduled for that day.

In the Scheduled task for the backup there are no notifications between the 9th and the 14th.

When the task has started today it seems that it has attempted to run the task several times. Which resulted in a number of failures.

I have followed the step to change the task limit within the registry in this other technet post to no success.

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/sharepoint/en-US/ea368220-a058-421b-bbf0-a02c9fa86a92/scheduled-backup-not-running?forum=windowsbackup

Scheduled Backup not Running

Using Windows Server Backup I setup a scheduled backup on Server 2008 R2 running Exchange 2010.  It ran as scheduled until 5 days ago.

The backup stopped running nightly.  Each day the backup management screen shows that a backup is scheduled for that night, but the scheduled backup does not run.  When I check each day, the next scheduled backup is shown as the backup for the evening to come; the last scheduled backup that ran successfully was shown as the last backup.

Even though backups are not running, there are no unsuccessful backup attempts listed in the recent backups list at the top of the utility.  There are also not any failed backups in the event logs.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Windows Server Backup 2008 R2 Offline Disk Names

$

As you add offline USB disk drives to Windows Server Backup 2008 R2 to use for backup, WSB composes and assigns disk (volume) names to each drive as you add it. The name is composed of the server name, timestamp, and the string DISK_nn.

The first drive you add will be DISK_01, the second DISK_02 etc. If you have two disk drives in the backup set, and you remove DISK_02, the next drive you add will be DISK_03 and not DISK_02. So it appears that the names are not recycled.

After using several drives in testing, I want to start over and have the actual drives I'll use for 'production' labeled properly and in sequence. How can I tell WSB to reset the name sequence back to DISK_01?

Additionally, where is this configuration information being stored? A search of the registry did not find the disk labels currently in use. Is there any way to control the next DISK_nn number assigned?

Thanx in advance. Geoff, Fredon NJ

Windows 7 backup/restore strategies

Dear all,

After a sudden death of the drive in my PC due to the (then) famous hard drive firmware bug I started to getting very worried on running backup regularly. I did have regular backup to the most important files from one partition to another partition, but that was all gone because all of them resided in the failed disk.

After a month of chaos, I finally realized that was a bug in the firmware and sent it to the vendor for the drive recovery. Now I got it back and bought another drive for backup purpose, the next best thing to do is the all-time important: the backup.

Knowing that the only way to create a VSS backup for all the volumes in disk 0 to disk 1 is wbadmin, so I have:

wbadmin start backup -backuptarget:e: -include:c:,d: -vssFull -quiet

When doing the end-to-end testing for the restore, the only way I could (instead of GUI):

wbadmin start recovery -version:08/31/2010-20:58 -items:d: -itemtype:Volume -backupTarget:e: -recoveryTarget:d: -quiet

C:\>wbadmin start recovery -version:08/31/2010-20:58 -items:d: -itemtype:Volume -backupTarget:e: -recoveryTarget:d: -quiet
wbadmin 1.0 - Backup command-line tool
(C) Copyright 2004 Microsoft Corp.

Warning:  The START RECOVERY command is not supported in this version of Windows.
The operation ended before completion.

C:\>

Can anyone point out that this is the best approach in terms of backup/restore in Windows 7 (x64 Ultimate) using Microsoft's VSS implementation? The start recovery command seems not supported, what gives? Or I overlooked something in the Windows backup/restore GUI tools? Thanks in advance :)

Test recovery of Windows Server Backup fails

I am testing "bare metal" recovery of backups from a Windows Server 2012 machine.  I have already tested restoring individual files, and I am able to successfully restore those from the server.

What I have done is to start another machine off the Windows 2012 installation DVD and attempt a bare metal restore.  I went into repair, and then system image recovery.  I attempted to restore from a network file share.  It finds no backups. I also copied the Windows Image Backup folder to a local drive in the other machine and pointed it there.  Nothing.

I then pressed shift-F10 to open a command prompt.  I ran

wbadmin get versions -backupTarget:\\[servername]\k

Where [servername] is the name of the server and k is the share. I get the message:

No backup was found.

If I do a dir on the path, I can see WindowsImageBackup and then a folder with the server name under that, and further down.

If I do wbadmin get versions from the server itself, it lists the backups properly.

What am I doing wrong?

Size of Backup Larger than Original Source

$

Hi all,

probably a very simple answer here but i've recently installed Windows Server Backup on a server. Backuping to a network share works well enough but i've noticed that the size of the backup is a decent size larger than the original source. e.g. backing up a 266 MB folder has resulted in a 314MB folder on the fileshare. Likewise a backup of a 122 MB folder has created a 216 MB folder on the network share. Is there any set logic/ratio to how much bigger the backup copy will be? Had a hunt around online but couldn't find anything.

Thanks for the help!
