Dear Server Expert,

In our environment, we have one server running server standard 2012 and it is not joined to the domain and all of clients computer are not joined to domain too. Currently, they are only in workgroup environment as we also don't have AD

May I know what is the best way to have the full access right so we are able to access the server and copy all the data out for a backup, for instance access to the server C or D drive from clients computers? i have local admin password with me. but i am still not able to access those server local drives for copy and paste operations.

Thanks.

Hello,

I have backup established via wbadmin. I start backup with command "wbadmin start systemstatebackup -backuptarget:D:", by this command I will create maximum 3 versions. When 3 versions exist and I run the command, the oldest version is deleted.

What I'm missing here? Why the oldest version is deleted? I want to keep more versions.

The OS type is: Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise.

Thanks in advance,

Windows backup take too long - Server 2012R2

Hello all,

I have issue with one our server. The OS is Windows Server 2012R2 - VM on Vmware ESXI 5.5. There is Windows Backup - full not incremental for whole server. The server is back up via iSCSI HDD to NAS. It is mailbox server with Exchange server 2013. The whole server has about 200GB. It usually takes about 2 hours to finished backup, but sometimes the backup process runs more then 6 or 7 hours. When the backup takes to long the server becomes unresponsible in the middle of the night for about half an hour. There are other servers(VM) with Windows Backup to same NAS(in another time) and the process is faster. I tried System file checker but there is no inconsistence of system files.

Is it possible to turn on advanced logging of Windows Backup? Do you know what it could cause?

Thanks

Hello,

Currently I'm facing issue while taking the system state backup via using Ntbackup on server. I've tried to give the location local C: , D: and also remote location but that didn't helped. VSS list writers are stable now issues identified with this. While reviewing the event logs , below warnings I'm getting each time when try to trigger the backup.

The backup operation that started at '‎2016‎-‎02‎-‎29T18:08:25.538538100Z' has failed with following error code '2155347997' (The operation ended before completion.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

Below plan already followed:-

Plan: 1

Try to take backup on another location might be on some network location or Local c: drive.

For C: drive

KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wbengine\SystemStateBackup\

Set the value of this entry as follows:

Name: AllowSSBToAnyVolume Data type: DWORD Value data: 1

Plan: 2

Please advise your expert suggestion in order to fix the issue.

Hi Everyone!

This is my situation;

SBS 2011 Standard (VM) on Esxi

Windows Server Backup is configured to backup too 2 x external disks

This completes the data backup for the system drive and the data drive.

However when it gets to the VSS Backup it all falls over, this is the error in the Windows Server Backup, I have tried running this both from the scheduled WSB Application and from a scheduled bat script.

Below is the last few lines of the WSB Event logs via Command Prompt.

Creating a backup of volume Data(E:), copied (99%).

I have done some research but havent found anything relating to the specific failure (RPC Service is unavailable)
I have gone through and checked all of the key services (RPC, VSS) and all of these and the dependencies are set to automatic.

Please help :)

Backup Software

Hello All

Recently I was using windows NT Backup on server 2003 to do my regular file backup. This would include backing up files on different servers by using a network map drive. Now I have upgraded to windows server 2012 and using a HP LTO Tape Drive. Seeing that I have upgraded to windows server 2012 I cannot use windows NT Backup to conduct my backup and the server backup that comes with the server 2012 does not allow me to use network map drive to conduct backups.

Is there any free software that I can use which will allow me to do my backups via network map drives and save the data to a tape?

Sincerely

R.D.Reid

Hi,

We are having only one DC 2008 R2 in our premises, we don't have a secondary domain controller.but we have system state back up incremental backup. Is there any way to restore the AD from back up.

We tried to restore the system state backup in another server as the DC has hardware issue. It got restored successfully but all the DC,Certification services, and DNS services are showing red mark.

Please help me by sharing the any step by step procedure.

Windows Server Backup 2012 R2 - Bare Metal Restore

$

Hi all,

pretty straightforward question here. When doing a bare metal restore of a server, do you need to restore it onto the exact same type of server (make, model, parts etc) that it was taken on? To break this down to it's most basic level, if you did a complete backup of a 2012R2 OS on an HP server, could you then use Windows Recovery to restore that image onto a Dell server (assuming the hard drive was adequately sized)? An engineer at one of our data centres has said that a full backup image can only be restored onto a server which is an exact physical copy of the original....

Thanks

Windows Server 2012 R2 - Backup Services - Installed but no Management Console snapin

$

Hi.  I have installed a new Windows Server 2012 R2 server and I would like to use the Windows Backup services.   I installed the Feature and I do not have the Windows Backup management console in the Administrative Tools.  When I look for *.msc in Windows\System32 it is not there.  The wbaadmin.msc is located in C:\Windows\System32\en-us. but clearly the system isn't woring properly, since if I try to run that (wbaadmin.msc) it gives and error that it cannot load the MMC.  I'm not sure what to do here to get Backup Services going.  I have tried removing the feature, rebooting and reinstalling the feature and rebooting, still the same problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Rob

Server 2012 backup fails while preparing one of the local volumes with "the mounted backup volume is inaccessible"

This is a new installation and configuring the backup for the first time. We have two local volumes C and E and a Hyper-V guest located on E. We are trying to backup everything every night and by default windows offers to backup it all including system state, hyperv, and the volumes.

After configuring the backup completes on System state and C: just fine and then moves to E:. Before it even displays a total drive size it calls an error and fails the backup with 'The mounted backup volume is inaccessible." The error in event log is 0x807800C5 which in all my searches of forums seems to be related to others doing backups to network drives. I'm using the dedicated local drive option and have added the drives as valid backup destinations.

Upon further looking if I examine C:\Windows\Logs\WindowsServerBackup\Backup_error-xxxxx.log I find the following:

Backup of volume E: has failed. The mounted backup volume is inaccessible. Please retry the operation.

E: has roughly 5.4TB free space and is using approximately 0.5TB total. My backup drives are empty 3TB drives.

I had Shadow Copy enabled for drive E so I tried changing the size limits to No Limit and when that didn't help I disabled Shadow Copy entirely on E:.

I'm at a loss of where to go next. It's difficult for me to make many changes because I have 6 backup destinations setup for the server and the infurating problem with needing to have all the destinations plugged in before you can successfully make changes to the backup settings is making it real difficult to try many things. I am remote to this server and had to make some serious changes to get the 6 drives all connected to begin with. (Yes, I read and tried all the command line suggestions which used to work on 2008 R2 just fine and now don't in 2012.)

Best practices for Windows OS backup?

$

Hi all

New to windows server administration and wondering what are the best practices for backing up your windows server OS?

Say something happens where you need to roll back a change or there is some catastrophic failure to the array the os is installed on.

What method do you use to back this up so you can easily restore it ?

Looking forward to hearing your ideas.

Best Regards.
