Backup Too Large?

$
0
0

Hello,

For many years I backed up my Win 7 Pro (desktop) to a 1 TB peripheral hard drive without problems.  Perhaps a year (or more) ago I began having difficulty with the files being "too large" to back up - although there should have been sufficient space.  I switched to just backing up a system image & storing copies of large files on it.  I recently had a major crash and had to do a clean reinstall, which I've now completed and figured that whatever was ailing the Windows backup program before, should now be resolved.

Last night I initiated a full backup of my C:drive (450 GB of data) to the 1 TB peripheral drive with only 93 GB on it (i.e.; 838 GB free).  The program ran all night and by mid-morning the peripheral drive was filled and the backup couldn't be completed.

Comments, suggestions?

Thanks.

Backup Failure - Parameter is Incorrect

Windows Server 2012 R2. Trying to back up C: drive to a remote shared folder. Each time I try to run it, it fails saying " The parameter is incorrect."

I  have tried multiple different settings. I've tried different folder combinations. I tried renaming and moving and even starting fresh with a new destination directory. I have tried uninstalling WBadmin and reinstalling it after the reboot. Same error.

This is the error report associated with one of the many failures. I censored out the computer name and destination names. I'll provide any additional information I can that would help lead to a resolution.

Thank you.

restoring image using DISM

Hi All,

I have downloaded Windows Server 2012 R2 Evaluation
pack using MSDN account. I am trying to create an customized image of it and
trying to restore it on another servers for development purpose. I have
activated the evaluation version and I have 180 days subscription. But when I
restore the image backup on another server, I don’t get the 180 days
subscription, I get an prompt which says to activate Windows. I would like to
know how to restore the image on another server with same 180 days
subscription. I am using DISM tool to restore the image.

Doing Windows Server Backup to external USB hard drive, one for each night of the week.

I'm sure this has been answered before, but wanted to ask anyway.

I use Symantec Backup Exec regularly to external USB hard drives. As a secondary/safety I will also use the internal 2008 Server Backup program. With Symantec I do a full system backup on Friday nights and incremental backups Monday - Thursday. The incremental usually only takes 15-30 minutes.  When that job finishes I will log into the server and start the built in Windows Server backup.  I usually do a full server backup which then creates the "WindowsImageBackup" folder on my external hard drive.  What I've normally been doing is deleting that folder each night on that particular night's USB drive and re-run a full server backup, roughly (600+ GB), which runs overnight.

Now if I don't delete that folder and run the backup I'm assuming this is an incremental backup and generally I see about 60+ GB being backed up.  Is this 60GB worth of data that has changed since the last full backup?  I guess my question here is that backup from the original full backup and the changes made from the week following is still a full backup as of that evening?  Or am I only able to restore just the changes from the previous week?

Maybe I'm doing overkill here, but if I run a full system backup using the Windows Server backup I feel safer that I have a full backup from every evening.  Over the weekend if I have time I have a dedicated USB drive that contains a full Windows Server Backup, while my other drives share the Symatec Backup Exec incremental saves and my Windows Server Backup.

Wbadmin.msc on windows server 2012 fails to start in MMC with error wbengine.exe 0xc000005

Hi,

Since some time now i have not been able to use the Windows server backup tool anymore.

I cant really tell since when this started, but for all i know the windows server backup service worked fine.

I even created a backup schedule and it made some backups.

I am running this windows server 2012 Standard at home with just a couple of basic applications.

The server is used to host several websites with IIS, it manages my local DHCP and is used for locally shared storage.

There are no other security applications installed yet, because i am trieing to get rid of this error first. (so no symantec or whatever)

Since some time i am having trouble opening the windows backup snap-in.

When ever i trie to open the Windows server backup snap-in i get the following error:

A fatal error occurred during a Windows Server Backup snap-in (Wbadmin.msc) operation.

Error details: The Windows Server Backup service has stopped.

Close Wbadmin.msc and then restart it.

Whenever this error occures the folowing error is show in the windows logbook:

I tried to find simmilar cases over the internet but i cant seem to find a solution for the problem.

I already tried to remove and reinstall the Windows server backup feature, this did not help.

Is there anyone here that can help me find a solution for this problem ?

Thank you !

New Backup Strategy Thoughts

Hello,

I recently picked up a client who had virtually no IT support for several years. I have spent the last few months with them slowly working out the problems they have with their current infrastructure and am in the process of getting them back on track. A few weeks ago, a user on the network opened an email that contained Cryptolocker and the virus was able to encrypt all the data on their local computer as well as some data on other user's computers through SMB shares as well as some data on one of their servers. No backup infrastructure.

Implementing an adequate backup infrastructure was of course on my long long list of things to get to, but unfortunately I hadn't made it that far yet. Long story short, I have plan for a new backup procedure that I wanted to get some feedback on.

As part of their infrastructure upgrades, I have installed a new Hyper-V host and have virtualized most of their physical servers which has left us with one Dell PE T320 unused. I have upgraded the array to an 8 drive RAID 50 with 5.5TB of storage for the purpose of storing backups of servers and critical data from their workstations.

My plan is to implement a reliable backup infrastructure that is economical, contains as many historical versions as disk space allows and that would present as low an attack interface as possible to protect the backups from ransom ware, accidental deletion and other threats.

My idea is as follows....

1. New backup server to contain an iSCSI target VHDX for each workstation/server.

2. Use Windows Server Backup/Windows Backup with "Backup to a hard disk that is dedicated..." option on servers/workstations using the iSCSI targets as the backup destinations.

3. Attach a local USB drive and configure the backup server to backup the server iSCSI target VHDX files. This would be configured to run before the nightly server backups so that there is always a second, complete copy that is 1 day behind.

4. Future implementation of an offsite cloud backup for absolutely critical data.

It seems to me that this option would not only allow the windows built-in backup to create incremental backups so there would be a history, but since there is no drive letter assigned and no UNC path to the destination, any potential ransom ware would not be able to access the backups. Also, since there are multiple complete copies, their data would be safe short of fire, natural disaster or the building coming down on top of it. Theft is not much of a concern at their facility.

I have already implemented the above solution for the servers and all the backups seem to be working properly.

Any thoughts or concerns would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Unable to set-up Windows Server Backup in Server Standard 2012 R2

During the configuration of the Windows Server Backup in server 2012 R2, I get the following error message when formatting my external drive.

'One of the source volumes specified has an invalid format and cannot be protected using Windows Backup. Only volumes formatted with NTFS/ReFS can be protected.'

Seems obvious to me. Reformat the hard drive to match that format. I reformatted under computer management and selected ReFS but I still get the same error message when I run the backup wizard again.

WS 2012 and NAS backup, failed to prepare the backup image

Hello,

I'm trying to backup some of my data from Windows server 2012. I'm using Buffalo LG-250GL NAS.

I'm using scheduled backup option, but it cannot prepare the backup image, error code is '0x807800C5' , Event id 517.

However, if i rename my folder name, then it creates new folder and successfully backs up my data, only issue is that it says version is not compatible. So again, if i change the folder name, it's okay, but i cant do that every day manually, it needs to back up everything automatically at certain time.

I've tried to search for a solution, but nothing works.

Maybe my NAS is bit too old and isn't compatible with 2012 version.

What are my options? Should i buy new NAS or is it fixable somehow?

I am trying to find information of how to use a VHD backup to create a multi-boot machine. I have a machine currently running Win 10 with a large hard drive. I have an older machine that I only need for some old programs and data. I have created a VHD using the Disk2VHD utility. I want to add the VHD to the Win 10 machine as a second operating system that I can boot when I need to use it. How do I do this using the VHD image I have?

Problems scheduling full server backups with wbadmin to network share

Hi, I have a trouble with backup to network share. I am using scheduling wbadmin with this argument:

start backup -backupTarget:\\share\backup -allcritical -include:C:,D:,E: -quiet

Using Windows server 2008 R2. Size of D: and E: is about 1TB and network share to backup is on synology (linux SMB share). I have other backup software installed and used on windows server. Using schedulig backup with wbadmin is "my second" backup. Therefore I need NOT TO UPDATE history of the files being backup (not truncate logs...). I need only full backup to network share.

After succesfully backup I see that C: is full backup and D: and E: was incremental. Why?

I also try -vssCopy parameters, but no efect. Still incremental backup of drive D: and E:.

Hi,

I have MS Backup running on my 2008 R2 Server and I wanted to try a restore ....... It runs nightly and shows 7 successful jobs from each night in the top window - but right now when I asked it to do a restore it only gives me one day previous to do that?  Any idea why?

It says there are 7 copies under the ALL BACKUPS column on the far right but when you click on the VIEW DETAILS  box:

They are dated:

4/7/2016 10:00PM

7/18/2013 5:47PM

8/11/2012 11:29PM

etc ....

So where is the successful ones from the column on the right called LAST BACKUP  that lists all the previous nights?

4/6/2016 10:00PM

4/5/2016 10:00PM

4/4/2016 10:00PM

4/3/2016 10:00PM

4/2/2016 10:00PM

4/1/2016 10:00PM

Any help is appreciated!

I have a problem with VSS on a 2012 server, in that is appears to be completely broken!

When I right-click on a local drive and select 'Configure Shadow Copies..' nothing happens, no window opens (in Task Manager I can see the ' configure shadow copies' process but it doesn't display the window.

If I run VSSadmin List Writers it displays the writers with no errors.

If I run the following commands I just get a flashing cursor, no output displays and nothing relating to VSS is recorded in the application event log: VSSadmin List Shadows, VSSadmin List Shadowstorage, VSS Delete Shadows /All.

I have run a chkdsk /r but hasn't helped.

It is a Hyper-V server running couple of VMs. This is impacting backups from running (Veeam backups fail) and Windows Backup feature hangs when installing. Windows Updates also hangs at 1% when installing. Not a healthy server!

Any ideas?!

Thanks,
