Hi IT Experts,

Since one week, backup in one of our servers shows "A Volume shadow copy service operation failed" and Bare Metal Recovery and System State failed, resulting no backup is happening, for testing purpose i manually enabled the VSS service to Automatic also checked the destination folder has enough space but no luck.

Further more, I check the Disk mgmt and found "System Reserved"" partition doesn't shows System but only Active & Primary, attached snapshot shows the current Disk Mgmt for your advice.

Appreciate your support

TIA

Hi all,

I am able to take normal backups like daily, weekly, monthly and yearly. For example, if I want to take backup in specific days like Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, I didn't see any option for that. How can I achieve his scenarios in windows server 2012 r2.

Thank You for the support.

2016 essentials

Backup was configured and running

Now it does not run on schedule but will run manually

Tried disabling and re configuring backup, shows as configured in Windows server backup but not in the essentials dashboard

If I check this against another server of the same type I see registry entries missing

How do I reset the backup part of this server so it starts working correctly again?

Does Server 2012 R2 Windows Backup automatically deletes the oldest backup? What is the default behavior?

Hi,

I am running Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows Native backup.  I have a dedicated drive that stores all backup. Let's call this Drive E.  See picture below on how my backup is setup.

I noticed that the Backup uses all available free space and delete the oldest backup only when the drive is full.  Is that the out of the box expectation? I don't see the option in Windows Server Backup that allows me to setup the overwrite protection.  In this case, I want to delete the backup automatically if it's 30 days old.  As you can see in the picture below, 12/25/19 is still available.  I can manually delete the backup, but I want to know if this is the expected behavior and how I can automate it using Windows native backup?

Thank you.

How long Windows backup maintains incremental backups ?

Forgive my English, I'm Brazilian.

Good afternoon guys, I wonder how long Windows Backup on a 2016 or 2012 server stores incremental backups. I know that Windows Server Backup automatically creates a full backup when both of the following conditions are true:

  • 14 incremental backups have occurred since the last full backup
  • More than 14 days have passed since the last full backup

But I don't know how long the incremental backup is maintained. Anybody know ?

The mounted backup volume is inaccessible.

When I try to backup my Server 2012, I get the message "Backup of volume C: has failed. The mounted backup volume is inaccessible. Please retry the operation." What are the requirements of backup media? The disc is sure accessible.

  • three node Server 2012 R2 cluster
  • 2 CSVs
  • Veeam Backup software v7

We've been running out of space on our CSVs. I determined that the hidden System Volume Information directory is huge. It is huge because of large VSS files in the directory.

Hi buddies.

Maybe you know how to solve this problem I'm getting. I have a backup policy in my server, that makes a full image. I'm able to restore that image (using the windows cd) if it's located in an USB HDD, but if I try to load the image trough a network share, the quoted error message appears...

Any idea? I've tried in different servers, locations, sharing permisions...

Thx!

Hi,

My Server backups stopped on 11 March.

I had my backups configured to be saved at an ISCSI drive I:

This drive is active and healthy:

The system has been working fine up until 11:

I can't perform any backups or restores.

When I try to browse for a restore it takes long time and I get this:

These are the source volumes:

I have recorded the backup settings and the result is the same.

This is what I get in the log:

Can anyone help solve this?

Thanks

Best Regards.

Cannot restore from dedicated backup drive on Server 2016

$

I'm really hoping someone can help out, as I'm going a bit crazy.

When I had set up the backup schedule for my WinServer 2016 domain controller in Windows Server 2016 Backup, I had it dedicate a virtual drive to backups.

The file for the virtual drive is called "Domain Controller Backup.vhdx" and is sitting on a backup drive mounted to G: on the host Windows system, FREDHOST (for purposes of this discussion).

Unfortunately, the vhd file for our domain controller got corrupt, so I'm trying to restore.

When I try to boot into the server, called DC1 (for purposes of this discussion), it cannot successfully boot and takes me to the troubleshooting options (as you would expect).

The problem is when I try to use System Image Recovery (in troubleshooting options), it just will not find any backups.

I have the backup virtual drive mounted to the virtual machine (via HyperV Manager) just as I did when it was successfully doing backups. However, it won't find any backups.

When I run mountvol in a command prompt, it shows multiple volumes, but none have a subdirectory called WindowsImageBackup.

I've tried making the virtual drive available via a network share (\\FREDHOST\G) and accessing via the network location option in System Image Recovery. It seems to see it, but then asks for ID and password. No matter what I enter (including a valid ID/PW for the host machine), it says its an invalid ID/PW. (Frankly I don't think this route is the answer, since I have a dedicated virtual backup drive.)

What do I need to do to get to my backups?!

Do I need to mount the dedicated backup drive a different way? Am I going to have to create a new 2016 Server and load from the Windows Server Backup interface?

I've seen a bunch of articles on the 'net, but none seem to address dedicated backup drives.

Thanks for your help.

Windows server 2019 backup DPM and WSB

Hi All

We have upgraded from server windows 2012 to windows server 2019 data center. New server, clean install and are using VM’s for the first time in Hyper-V and in the past we used the windows server backup (WSB) tool that is on the dashboard. Our VM’s are running DC AD with roaming profiles, file shares, DHCP, DNS, SQL etc.

I have been reading about it. There is Data Protection Manager (DPM) and WSB. We only have one server that runs all the VM’s.

Can we backup the host server using WBS and will it backup all the VM’s and file etc?

Or use DPM to backup the Host or backup the VM’s only?

What would be the best way/method to backup everything?

Thank you.

Backup error 0x80780021

Hi, this post is consequence of a issue with Veeam Backup.

Short summary: all the jobs fails with error (another shadow copy creation is already in progress), and the last step was test a backup with Windows Server Backup.

So, i tried a job (Full and VSS mode), but in bot cases, these failed with the error:"The backup operation that started at '‎2020‎-‎04‎-‎02T01:08:27.852000000Z' has failed because the Volume Shadow Copy Service operation to create a shadow copy of the volumes being backed up failed with following error code '0x80780021'. Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved."

This is a Windows Server 2012 R2, Physical, with Hyper-V role installed and several Productions VMs running on. Is part of a Cluster of 12 nodes.

I tried restart the VSS services, but the error persist. The last weekend we reboot all nodes

There is no errors on writers:

How to backup a backup created by wbadmin on a dedicated drive

Hi,

I am planning to dedicate an HDD to Windows server backup for backing up the BMR of our 2019 Domain Controller systems. However, I also need a mechanism to backup this backup disconnected from network. I.e. the incremental backup file which will be generated usingwbadminand stored locally on that dedicated drive, I need to copy that over to a network share for redundancy just in case of, you probably know why... Unfortunately, what I have seen is that once I dedicate a drive towbadmin, the drive is no longer available for other backup programs and even not to wbadmintool itself to perform a backup of the backup. Please advise if there is a supported way by Microsoft Support of creating a copy of the backups stored on the drive dedicated towbadminor have another scheduled task to backupthe server to a file share in addition to the dedicated backup HDD.

Thanks for your help

Primary Domain Controller is dead

Hi! Everyone, i am working on a test scenario in a Lab. The scenario is that i have two domain controllers, primary domain controller (DC1) and Additional domain controller (ADC). My primary domain controller(DC1) is dead beyond recovery, after i seize FSMO roles and make my Additional domain controller (ADC) as domain controller, can i install a brand new server and make that new server as primary domain controller by assigning it the same name as initially my DC1 had? or will the new server be introduced as ADC (Additional Domain Controller) in my environment and previous ADC will automatically become Primary Domain controller?

How i am going to add this new server in my domain? Can i assign new server the same name, IP address, Subnet mask etc as initially assigned to my Primary Domain controller or do i need to assign new name to this new server? How will it impact my environment. Also do i need to change my ADC name to DC1 after making it PDC?

What is the best and safest approach to deal with this scenario?

Windows Backup - Alternate backups fail

$

I have seen the problem below randomly on multiple servers, but have never been able to find a solution.

I am using Windows Backup to backup the system state on servers.  The backups are completing successfully as per the schedule in the GUI, then start to fail on alternate backups for some unknown reason.  Even if the backup is run manually, it will fail on each alternate attempt.  It doesn't matter if the scheduled options are used or different backup options, any files or the system state.  It can be to a dedicated backup disk or share, it fails on each alternate backup.  The error is: Failed, more data is available.  I have tried to uninstall the Windows Backup feature, reboot, remove the log files from C:\Windows\Logs\WindowsServerBackup and install the feature again.  I have also run wbadmin delete catalog.  Check disk reports that all the drives are clean and the system file checker finds no problems.  All outstanding Windows updates have been installed.  I have tried to use the Sysinternals tool, Process Monitor to try to figure out what may be causing the problem, but there is nothing from the wbengine or vss processes that would highlight any problems to me.  The particular server in question is a virtual machine running Windows 2012 R2 Standard and the backup is within the VM.  Some event logs that may be of interest:

BACKUP ERROR 0x8078011E

Hello there.

About four months ago my Windows Server 2012R2 started to get an error "Windows Backup Failed to Get an Exclusive Lock on ESP"

Here is log: "The backup operation started at '2020 - 04 - 20T11: 06: 04.405816800Z' failed with the following error code '0x8078011E' (Windows Backup failed to obtain an exclusive lock on the EFI system partition ( This may occur if another application is using files in ESP. Try the operation again.) Check the event details for a solution and run the backup again after solving the problem."

First off I google it and found something about Kaspersky blocking EFI partition. I uninstalled it, but problem remains the same.

Someone could enlight me?
