Windows Server Backup Failed because another operation was in progress

Hi:

Windows Server Backup was running successfully on this Windows Server 2008 R2 machine then simply stopped working, reporting "The operation failed because another operation was in progress. Retry the operation."  However, no other backup operation was in progress.

The Items tab for both the System Reserved volume and the C: volume show status: "Backup not started"

The Errors tab for both volumes shows Message: "The operation to back up the volume was stopped before the operation started running."  However, this messege is not accurate because I manually started the backup and saw progress as System Reserved volume completed, C: volume approx. 40%, System State not yet started.

I've already removed/re-added the Windows Server Backup feature to the server but same issue.

Any ideas?

Thank you!

shadow copy

I see there is a lot of shadow copy when I run vssadmin list shadows. It seems that a shadow copies created very hour. This creates problem for me because it is a exchange server and shadow copy on database drive will freeze the db temporally. It also almost used up all free space on the drive. I check everywhere I know trying to disable this behavior but I can't find it. There server is win2012R2. Can anyone help to point out where to disable the shadowcopy running? Also I have Backupexec agents installed on the server. But there is no backup job setup. I consulted with Veritas and they said it's not their software causing it. I disabled the Backupexec agents and the shadow copy still creates. So it's not Backupexec causing the issue.

Thanks

Wbadmin.msc on windows server 2012 fails to start in MMC with error wbengine.exe 0xc000005

Hi,

Since some time now i have not been able to use the Windows server backup tool anymore.

I cant really tell since when this started, but for all i know the windows server backup service worked fine.

I even created a backup schedule and it made some backups.

I am running this windows server 2012 Standard at home with just a couple of basic applications.

The server is used to host several websites with IIS, it manages my local DHCP and is used for locally shared storage.

There are no other security applications installed yet, because i am trieing to get rid of this error first. (so no symantec or whatever)

Since some time i am having trouble opening the windows backup snap-in.

When ever i trie to open the Windows server backup snap-in i get the following error:

A fatal error occurred during a Windows Server Backup snap-in (Wbadmin.msc) operation.

Error details: The Windows Server Backup service has stopped.

Close Wbadmin.msc and then restart it.

Whenever this error occures the folowing error is show in the windows logbook:

Windows 2008 Server Backup - fatal error - cannot find path specified

I have added the Windows Server Backup feature to a couple of our Server 2008 Standard edition servers.  When I launch it, I get a message:
A fatal error occurred during a windows Server Backup snap-in operation.
The system cannot find the path specified.
Close windows server Backup and then restart it.

Restarting doesn't help, nor does a restart of the server itself.  I'm getting the same error on both servers, one a Dell PowerEdge 1900 and the other a PowerEdge 2950 III.

What is the path that it is looking for?

Thanks for any assistance!
Charles

Restore WinXP tape backups in Win7?

Hi there,

I was running Windows XP SP3 and I have recently installed Win7 (64-bit).  I have lots of LTO2 tapes containing data that I might need to access from Windows 7.  My question is: how do I access my LTO2 tape archives from within Windows 7?

The backups were created using NTbackup.exe on WinXP.  I have tried installing NTbackup.exe on Win7 but it complains that "The Backup Utility cannot connect to the Removable Storage service".  A little bit of Googling reveals that Microsoft have no plans to implement the Removable Storage service for Win7.

I have tried running NTbackup.exe from within Virtual XP but NTbackup.exe doesn't seem to be able to access my SCSI LTO drive (I have successfully installed the SCSI and LTO drivers on Win7 and I've attempted to install the drivers on the Virtual XP system).

I have attempted to use Windows 7's backup program but I can't figure out pursuade it to access my LTO drive!

Does anyone have any thoughts as to how I can access my old LTO tape archives from within Win7?

Many thanks,
Jack

Why Can't Windows 10 PRO Support Shadow Storage on a Different Drive?

$

With the increasing use of SSD drives for the system drive it is only sensible to try to reduce as much as possible unwanted writes to the SSD.

One way to do this would be to allow Shadow Storage to be created and stored on another device. In the past this was done with VSSADMIN

e.g. C:\Windows\system32>vssadmin add shadowstorage /for=c: /on=d: /maxsize=30% OR

      C:\Windows\system32>vssadmin Resize shadowstorage /for=c: /on=d: /maxsize=30%

This was available on previous versions, but the facility to do so has now been removed on windows 10 PRO.

It is not impossible to do because I noticed that on a conventional HDD as I added additional partitions, their Shadow Storage allocations were created on the original volume.

So why remove the facility to remove it via command???

Why do all my backup copies disappear when the disk reaches capacity?

Windows Server 2016 running Exchange 2016.  Windows Server Backup does a Full backup every night.

I check the backups every Thursday.  Last week it had 20-copies and this week it has 1-copy.  This has happened 3-times now.  It resets back to one instead of deleting older copies to make room.

What's going on?

Thank you in advance!

Restoring Windows Server 2012 Standard Using Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard Installation Media Disk

I was in the process of restoring a Windows Server 2012 Standard Image and i encountered an error;

"Re-image failed, error: The processor architecture or OS version of Windows Recovery Enviroment is not the same as that of the computer that was backed up."

Then i realized that i was using a Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard Installation Media.

Is there backwards compatibility between Windows Server 2012 Standard andWindows Server 2012 R2 Standard when it comes to Windows Server Image Restore?

Greetings. I am a new user of both qnap and w2k8 server.

I joined qnap device to the w2k8 domain. Now I am trying to set up server backup I ran into a problem.

As instructed I use QNAPname\user to login, it takes the login info and takes me to the next and final step, but all the way at the end i get the following error message:

(the same user login information works fine for win7 workstations backup)

the user name being used for accessing the remote share folder is not recognized by the local computer

Schedule Backup as administrator error "You must be a member of the local Administrators or Backup Operators groups to schedule a backup."

Logged in as administrator
Going through Administrative Tools -> Windows Server Backup -> Backup Schedule
Setting up a new remote backup on a different server (requiring different login credentials to save to that location if it matters)

Everything goes through until I hit Finish on the Confirmation page, then after a few moments it gives me this:

Error:
"You must be a member of the local Administrators or Backup Operators groups to schedule a backup."

It does let me run the Backup Once through Windows Server Backup to the same location, but not through Backup Schedule.
